About Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi)
Raksha Bandhan is one of the important festivals in Hindu religion. It is also called the festival of Rakhi. This festival is celebrated all over India on the full moon day ( Purnima ) of Shraavana month according to Hindu calendar.
It is a festival of brother and sister. The relationship between siblings is extraordinary and is given importance in every a part of the planet . However, when it involves India, the connection becomes all the more important as there's a festival called "Raksha Bandhan" dedicated for the sibling love. On this day sisters tie a special band called 'Rakhi' on their brother's wrist.
This is a special Hindu festival which is widely known in India and countries like Nepal to symbolize the love between a brother and a sister. The occasion of Raksha Bandhan is widely known on the complete moon day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar within the month of Shraavana which usually falls within the August month of Gregorian calendar.
Meaning of Raksha Bandhan
A rakhi is made up of cotton thread, silk thread or it can be made up of silver or gold. In Indian tradition a fragile thread of rakhi is considered even stronger than an iron chain as it strongly binds brother and sister in the circumference of mutual love and trust. This festival is mainly celebrated for the well being and long life of brothers.
Importance of Rakhi.
Hinduism- The festival is especially celebrated by the Hindus within the northern and western parts of India along side countries like Nepal, Pakistan and Mauritius.
Jainism- The occasion is additionally revered by the Jain community where Jain priests give ceremonial threads to the devotees.
Sikhism- This festival dedicated to the brother-sister love is observed by the Sikhs as "Rakhardi" or Rakhari.
Sisters prepare the pooja thali with 'Diya's', 'Kumkum' ,'thali', 'sweets' and rakhi. They worship the god, tie rakhi on the wrist of their brothers and wish for their well being. Brothers give gift to their sisters and take a lifelong vow to protect their sisters. Raksha Bandhan celebrates a bond of affection and affection between brother and sister.
This festival is a symbol of love, togetherness and faith. On this day tasty dishes, wonderful sweets etc. are cooked at homes. Family members exchange gifts with well wishers and relatives.
Origin of Rakshabandhan.
One of the famous stories of Raksha Bandhan from history is of Krishna and Draupdi. Once, Krishna's finger got cut during fight with Shishupal. At that time Draupadi immediately tore off a piece of her saree and wrapped around Krishna's finger. Due to this sisterly love act, Krishna promised her to protect her from any difficulty.
Nowadays everyone remain busy in their work, but festivals like Raksha Bandhan brings family members together and spread happiness and merriment.
