Govardhana hill also named as Giri Raj may be a sacred Hindu site at Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is considered as sacred hill because it is related with the life of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna spent a part of his life roaming among its shaddy van, nikunj and kund.

Govardhan Puja
Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the next day of Diwali in India. Story behind this occasion is as:
On this day Lord Krishna defeated Lord Indra, deity of thunder and rain. On this day Lord Krishna saw that there was a huge preparation of annual offerings to Indra by the villagers. He could not get the things and asked his father, he further debated with the villagers that they are all farmers, they do farming on this hill and their cattle is also feed by this hill then for whom this all preparation is? He continues to say that all human beings should do the dharma to the best of their ability and do not pray sacrifices for natural phenomenon. The villagers got convinced by the Krishna and did not proceed for the puja. On this Indra got angered and flooded the village with heavy rain and thunder storm continuously for seven days. Lord Krishna left the Govardhan Hill and all the villagers and animals got shelter under the hill.
