Before Moving on to the Topic You Should Know : What is Cyclone?

According to metrology it is a large scale of mass that rotates around a strong center of low atmospheric pressure. It is characterized by strong winds, thunderstorms.

Why Cyclones are Named?

Cyclones are named just to make the communication more easy. It aimed to reduce the confusion in case of multiple storms in some basin. It becomes easy to aware people and also helps media and disaster managers. Naming helps to identify an individual cyclone, create awareness and send warnings to general public.

"Chaos as Cyclone Amphan"

Cyclone cut a swathe through coastal region of West Bengal and Odisha yesterday.

When the whole India is fighting against Covid-19 a more worrying thing happened in Bengal and Odisha. A chaos as cyclone Amphan strikes there last night.
It is recorded as the strongest storm in Bengal. Almost everyone from that coastal area have been affected by the storm. As per Indian National Disaster Response Force a district in West Bengal is Pulverized by the cyclone Amphan.
Cyclone Amphan made a landfall in the coastal region of Odisha and West Bengal and also has had an adverse effect on the weather of whole country.

CM of the state states that "Cyclone Amphan is a bigger disaster than Covid-19".


Cyclone Amphan with a wind speed of up to 185Kmph claimed 10-12 lives leading to flood, flattened houses, cast aside trees and electricity poles. It is the most severe storm in the Bay of Bengal since Odisha Super Cyclone 1999.It has affected the electricity supply and destroyed many houses and embankments there.

Officials were also concerned about the damage to the sunder bans which is a UNESCO World heritage site famous for its mangrove forests and tigers.
Damage Amphan Caused:
  1. Fallen electricity poles and trees make the path impassible.
  2. A two month old baby was killed after the wall collapse after heavy overnight rain.
  3. A woman died after an electricity pole fell on her uprooted by the storm.
  4. houses were like they have been run over by a bulldozer.
  5. The extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan made a landfall in some areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu's office on Twitter:
Deeply anguished by the loss of lives and devastation caused to crops and public and personal properties by Amphan cyclone in West Bengal and Odisha. My appreciation to the State administrations for timely evacuation of lakhs of people to safer places and undertaking rescue & relief operations in coordination with the central NDRF teams in the affected areas. My condolences to bereaved families.
The Story is not over yet: There is continuously raining for several days as tropical moisture is pumped in from Bay of Bengal. The risk of flooding might be remain high throughout the next few days.

  2. Due to cyclone Amphan 2 hangers got Damaged at Kolkata Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport including an Aircraft VT-RPG parked inside one of those hangers.
